Bath Abbey, Bath, Somerset, England

Bath Abbey, Somerset, England

Bath, Somerset is the county’s largest town and the most celebrated of English spas. The Roman City called Aquae Sulis grew up around the baths establishment. Judicious reconstruction gives a good idea of how it all looked in Roman days. Bath is also famous for its ancient Abbey and for over twelve hundred years a Christian church has stood here.. In about 800 a monastery was founded and Edgar of the house of Wessex was crowned King of all England in its church in 973. The Norman Abbey on this site was replaced by the present structure, began in 1499 and designed in the most English architectural style by the brothers Robert & William Vertue, who were King Henry VII’s master masons and friends of Oliver King, Bishop of Bath & Wells. (1495-1503). Restoration work began in 1603 made good the damage suffered at the dissolution of the monasteries. Further restoration in 1860-83 included the marvellous stone vaulting of the nave. The Abbey Church of Bath is one of the most important religious buildings in England and is of interest as the last great church to be built in the perpendicular period. Present day Bath hosts many visitors to see this fine and ancient building.

Benjamin Baber was Mayor of Bath three times and is buried in the North Cross Aisle, of Bath Abbey.  The inscription is as follows: "Here lyeth the body of BENJAMIN BABER, one of the Aldermen and thrice Mayor of this City, who died 22 May 1705 aged 78 years."
